Portfolio weight beats dollar size

A $2 billion position can be a rounding error or a bet-the-firm stake. Weight is the difference.

The most common mistake in reading 13Fs is ranking positions by dollars. A $2 billion position at a $400 billion manager is 0.5% of the book — an administrative detail. The same $2 billion at a $6 billion fund is a third of everything the manager reports. Dollar size measures the manager; weight measures the decision.

This is why every holdings table on this site leads with portfolio weight — the position's share of the manager's reported 13F equity value — and why the site's "high-conviction" screens are defined in weight terms (for example, new positions entering at 2% of the book or more), not dollar terms.

Rank tells a second story

Position rank (largest = #1) adds ordinal context: a stock moving from a manager's #22 position to #5 across two quarters reveals relative conviction even when the dollar change looks modest, because it outgrew everything in between. Weight and rank together describe how a position sits inside a portfolio, which is the thing a copied headline number can't tell you.

Where weight misleads

Weight inherits the 13F's blind spots: it is a share of the reported U.S. long book, not of the firm's true portfolio. For a manager whose 13F captures most of what they run (a long-only U.S. equity fund), weight is close to true allocation. For a global or long/short manager it is a share of a slice. Manager pages note the reported value so you can judge how much of the firm you are looking at, and curated pages carry per-manager context notes for exactly this reason.
